“Without strategy, execution is aimless. Without execution, strategy is useless.” — Morris Chang
Once it is clear from where the change process is starting, there are three simple questions which will determine the direction the leader will guide the organization towards.
- What is it for?
- Who is it for?
- What is the promise?
These questions are universal and depend on the change process and the depth of the change process the organization can take up from where it is. Answering them gives a direction that will serve as a compass on the journey.
“In real life, strategy is actually very straightforward. You pick a general direction and implement like hell.” — Jack Welch
Describing the starting point and direction correspond to drawing a map of the journey. It’s a map that can be shared with everybody involved and will be adapted along the way with the findings of all those contributing to the journey. The progress on the map will help the team see and confirm the progress they’ve made.
